Santam
Crop Insurance and Climate Change

Santam, South Africa’s leading short-term insurer since 1918, holds a dominant position in the agricultural insurance sector, underwriting over half of the country's crop insurance. This insurance line is critical for shielding farmers from environmental risks. However, South Africa's climate fluctuations pose substantial challenges, with events like hailstorms, floods, and droughts frequently impacting profitability. Notably, severe hailstorms in 2013 led to a spike in damage claims, highlighting the sector's vulnerability to weather variability.
With climate change expected to increase the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, the company seeks to refine and advance its strategic approach to sustainability and climate resilience. Santam is looking for a comprehensive analysis of its current strategies, recommendations for improving its climate risk management, and insights into potential expansion opportunities in other African markets.
