Kompanion Financial Group
Mission-first Microlending

Kompanion Financial Group, headquartered in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, operates as a microfinance institution (MFI) with a strong commitment to social business, drawing its philosophy from Mercy Corps. Over six years, it has grown significantly under the leadership of Catherine Brown and Ulanbek Termechikov, serving over 120,000 clients with an emphasis on community development alongside financial services. Kompanion's operations include providing loans and extensive technical support through its in-house unit of agronomists, veterinarians, and environmental consultants, which educate farmers on sustainable farming practices. This dual focus on finance and development is unique in the microfinance sector.
However, Kompanion faces numerous challenges. The microfinance market in Kyrgyzstan is increasingly competitive, demanding strategic decisions to maintain its market position while adhering to its social mission. Furthermore, its plans to expand into Tajikistan must contend with poor infrastructure, high fixed costs for communications technology, and the complexities of establishing trust in its financial system. The organization also aims to secure a deposit-taking license which involves navigating stringent regulations and expanding its treasury department to meet prudential requirements. Additionally, Kompanion is exploring the creation of a holding company to attract new capital, a move that would necessitate significant administrative restructuring and alignment with potential investors' visions.
