Hospitals Beyond Boundaries

Dr Examines woman on the street with a stethoscope

Hospitals Beyond Boundaries (HBB) was founded in 2012 by Mohd Lutfi Fadil Lokman and Wan Abdul Hannan to address the lack of medical resources for the Cham people in Cambodia. Initially a student-led volunteer organization, HBB quickly grew and established a formal office in Kuala Lumpur by 2014. In 2015, HBB opened its first clinic in Phnom Penh, providing primary care and general practice treatments. The organization operates on a cross-subsidy model, where wealthier patients subsidize the costs for those who cannot afford treatment. Despite securing significant funding from wealthy Malaysians in Qatar, HBB faces financial sustainability challenges. The organization is exploring ways to reduce costs, such as implementing an electronic medical record system, and is considering expansion to new locations like Kampong Cham. CEO Lutfi also is contemplating new business models to support both current and future clinics.
